Good morning, robotics enthusiasts. Amazon now runs 1M+ warehouse robots, and they’re about to outnumber the humans working beside them. New injury data shows what that’s like on the floor: serious injuries are down and minor ones are up.

Also: tiny bots deliver medicine to the heart, and China’s 13-foot humanoid runs on hydraulics.

In today’s robotics rundown:

  • Amazon’s next robot upgrade comes with a catch

  • Johns Hopkins builds heart-docking micro-bots

  • Ukraine drops robots behind Russian lines

  • This 13 ft. humanoid makes a hydraulic comeback

AMAZON

🤖 Amazon’s next robot upgrade comes with a catch

The Rundown: Amazon’s 1M+ warehouse robots are getting AI traffic control and a sense of touch. The upgrade could take the worst grunt work off human staff, and it could also push them to move faster to keep up, Ars Technica reports.

The details:

  • Amazon expects to more than double its robotic-arm fleet in 2026. It says its touch-sensitive Vulcan arm can handle 75% of the item types in its warehouses.

  • Its DeepFleet AI routes robots through warehouses like a traffic controller. Amazon says it cuts robot travel time by 10%.

  • A study linked warehouse robotics to 40% fewer severe injuries and 77% more minor ones. Amazon reports its global incident rate fell 43% from 2019 to 2025.

  • Internal documents reviewed by the New York Times projected that automation could avert 600K+ U.S. hires by 2033.

Why it matters: Amazon says automation creates new jobs, but its robots could also curb hiring and push workers to move faster. Research links robotics to fewer severe injuries but more less-severe ones, which certainly raises questions about how many workers Amazon will need and what it will expect from each.

MEDICAL BOTS

❤️ Johns Hopkins builds heart-docking micro-bots

The Rundown: Johns Hopkins engineers built a pair of magnetic robots — pencil-tip wide, rice-grain long — that steer through a beating heart, latch onto an infection, and dose it with antibiotics on the spot.

The details:

  • A barbed needle module anchors at the infection as a docking station. A drug module then clicks on, unloads its medicine, and swaps out for repeat doses.

  • External electromagnetic coils steer and power both bots, so neither carries batteries or motors; a camera-guided control system handles navigation.

  • The drug module released a 22-microliter dose over three hours, a slow drip straight onto the target.

  • So far, the bots have only been tested in an artificial heart with pulsing flow and in excised pig tissue; no living hearts have been tested yet.

Why it matters: Endocarditis is a serious heart infection that often requires weeks of IV antibiotics and sometimes surgery. These robots could offer a way to deliver repeated doses directly to an infected site, though testing in living hearts is still needed to assess their safety and effectiveness.

DEFENSE ROBOTICS

🪖 Ukraine drops robots behind Russian lines

The Rundown: Ukraine is running airborne warfare with robots — heavy drones now carry armed ground machines over the front and drop them behind Russian lines, turning two weapons it already fields into a new line of attack, Business Insider reports.

The details:

  • Heavy drones dropped explosive-laden ground robots 10+ km behind Russian positions during Operation Vivaldi, a Ukrainian commander told Business Insider.

  • A second unit built and fielded its own drone-dropped robot in 10 days, per Brave1, Ukraine’s state-backed defense tech accelerator.

  • Only a handful of units have mastered these missions, Brave1 told Business Insider — and keeping robots linked to their operators remains a problem.

  • The machines don’t fight alone: infantry, drone crews and supply teams still work alongside them, and still face deadly risk.

Why it matters: Brave1 says the U.S. explored the broader ‘marsupial’ robotics concept for more than three decades without combat deployment. Kyiv ordered 25K ground robots for H1 2026 — double all of 2025 — and reportedly wants robots replacing up to 30% of personnel on the hardest front sectors by year-end.

CHINESE ROBOTICS

🤖 This 13 ft. humanoid makes a hydraulic comeback

The Rundown: Beijing’s NeodraDynamics brought Neo1 to the China International Industry Fair this week — a 13-foot, 1.2-ton humanoid with a claimed 1,102-pound payload, running on the hydraulics most rivals left behind.

The details:

  • NeodraDynamics built 39 of Neo1’s 41 joints around its own digital hydraulic actuators; each weighs about 1 kg and is rated for ton-level continuous thrust.

  • Electric drives handle just two joints, the forearm rotations, where the company wants servo-level precision.

  • NeodraDynamics claims ±0.005 mm repeatability, but its Sept. release listed ±0.05 mm — a 10x gap it hasn’t yet explained.

  • JD Industrial co-exhibited Neo1 and plans pilots in ports, mines, and nuclear sites, though neither company has named a buyer or a price yet.

Why it matters: Boston Dynamics retired its hydraulic Atlas in 2024 after more than a decade, replacing it with an all-electric model it said was stronger and headed for Hyundai’s factories. NeodraDynamics is positioning Neo1 against that move. But the robot has only been showcased so far, with its actual factory work yet to be seen.
